Mariska Hargitay Reacts to ‘My Mom Jayne’ Emmy Nomination

Last night I was looking for a movie.  I am a fan of Law & Order SVU, so when I saw the Jayne Mansfield documentary, I was intrigued. All I can say is “Wow”.

Mariska did not have clear memories of her mom. Jayne was a movie star in the 1960’s who tragically died in a car accident when Mariska was a toddler. Jayne’s story moved me because she was a woman of substance who was typecast as a “blonde bombshell”. She kept working to support her family, always searching for a way to break away from an image that did not reflect her real identity. Jayne was intelligent, speaking multiple languages and playing violin and piano. She had a complicated romantic life, with multiple partners.

Mariska embarked on a journey to discover who her mother really was. She collected memorabilia, and the documentary contains very emotional interviews with her siblings, stepmother, and people who worked for her mother. Mariska found some mysteries among the precious items. In true Olivia Benson style, she followed some clues from her childhood.

Mariska could connect with her mother and discover family secrets buried in the past. What I love about the story more than anything is how Mariska embraced everything about her family and discovered a new identity. It was wonderful to see how loving and open she is to her siblings and her new-found family members.

It’s a perfect example of achieving happiness by fully embracing who you really are because you accept even the thorny parts of your identity.
