I really like my plumber, and I need to call him because I have a couple of issues that are getting on my nerves. The thing is that I think he is going to tell me I need a new toilet.
He fixed it once. During that visit, he said he could give me a new accessible toilet, and he had one on his truck. He grew animated while telling me that he was sure this was the best option for me. He probably had it on his truck for a while, and was waiting for someone to need it. I haven’t called him because I don’t want to have that conversation again.
The thing is, I am not a wheelchair user. An accessible toilet is higher, to make transfers easier for someone using a chair. On my best day, I am not five feet tall. On a high toilet, my feet don’t touch the floor. It may as well be a carnival ride for someone whose balance is so bad! I need to shift forward before getting off, but if I don’t have my feet down, I might fall off. I hope all these details are not too much information for you, but I did explain to the plumber (without a demonstration, obviously!)
I don’t know that he really understood, but accessibility is not one size fits all. What works for some doesn’t always work for all. By the way, If a person with a disability crosses your path, you can point out accessible features, but don’t be offended if the disabled person doesn’t use them.
